Curran holds a PhD in Radio-Television-Film (RTF) from the University of Texas, where Curran is a joint lecturer in RTF, Women’s and Gender Studies and Asian American Studies. Broadly conceived, Curran’s scholarship centers on queer subcultural media formations cast in contradistinction to the normativity, whiteness and wealth of the dominant Western media industries. Curran also works in the film industry, most recently as co-producer of the Guggenheim-funded feature documentary, Justice for Jennifer, directed by PJ Raval and set for 2018 festival release. Justice explores the recent murder of a Filipina transwoman, Jennifer Laude, by a US marine, unpacking the complicated overlay of sexual, transgender and post-colonial politics on the island nation. Previously, Curran served as Associate Producer on the Sundance-funded gay senior documentary, Before You Know It (2013, SXSW Premiere).

Finally, Curran is a curator and community organizer–most recently as the Founder and Artistic Director of OUTsider, an out-of-the-box LGBTQ+ transmedia festival that mischievously mingles film, dance, theater, music, performance and visual art. Spotlighting voices and visions that are elsewhere sidelined, OUTsider provides a robust  platform for queer artists across not only disciplinary boundaries, but those related to race, gender, generation, size, ability and national identity.
